2015 M-E MOURNS LOSS OF LONG TIME COMMUNITY LEADER
written by TJM
The Maine-Endwell Football program along with Maine-Endwell Schools would like to express great sorrow in the passing of one of its longstanding board members and community volunteers that went to meet the lord on Thursday. Alan Ewing, “Al,” succumbed to complications from an illness that developed last week and finally lost his battle yesterday morning at Lourdes Hospital.
Al spent the majority of his professional career as the Chief Purchasing Agent at Union-Endicott Central Schools and raised two sons, Alex (Mary) and Andrew (Nicole) with his wife Bonita. Following his retirement he immersed himself in the Maine-Endwell community joining the school board twelve years ago and serving as its president for three of those years. He was also a committed member of the Town of Union Zoning Board for some thirty-seven years, five of which he chaired and president of the School District Health Insurance Consortium.
Aside from his personal contributions and service to the community that he loved, he is most remembered for an infectious smile and big presence. His passion for football took him to sidewalks of Spartan Stadium where he was master of 50\50 raffle sales for many seasons and it was there that he seemed most at home. An easy conversationalist, Al was always willing to talk about the school sports, an issue in the community, or his beloved Red Sox. He also enjoyed helping out with the Friends of Spartan Football and lent his time wherever he could to help its cause. The world is a colder place without Mr. Ewing in it and we at Maine-Endwell Football will miss him dearly.
Alan is predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Dorothy Ewing and survived by his loving wife and sons and his five grandchildren, James, Andrew, Liam, Sofie, and Lauren. The family will receive friends at the Federated Church of Maine, 2615 Main Street, Route 26 in Maine on Saturday from 4-7 PM. Private Services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Alan's memory may be made to The Chow Pantry at the Federated Church of Maine.
